About these terms

CodeLA is a private website where a small, invited study group learns Python together. It is run by the organiser of CodeLA (“we” and “us” below). By asking to join and using the site, you agree to these terms. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your data. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the law where you live, such as consumer rights that cannot be excluded.

Who can join

  • You must be at least 16 years old. If the law where you live requires a parent’s or guardian’s consent for someone your age to use an online service, please don’t ask to join: the site cannot record that consent.
  • Anyone can ask to join while requests are open, but every account is approved by hand. The organiser of CodeLA decides who joins the group and may decline a request without giving a reason.
  • Requests may be closed at any time, for example when the group is full.

Your account

  • One account per person. Don’t share your password or let anyone else use your account.
  • Choose a username that isn’t offensive and doesn’t pretend to be someone else.
  • If you think someone else has used your account, change your password and tell the organiser of CodeLA straight away.
  • You are responsible for what is posted from your account.

Code of conduct

This is a place to learn, which means asking questions that feel basic and making mistakes in front of others. Help make that feel safe.

  • Be kind and patient. Critique code, not people. Give feedback that is specific and useful.
  • No harassment, bullying, discrimination, hate speech, threats, sexual content or spam.
  • Don’t post other people’s personal information, or anything you don’t have the right to share.
  • Submit your own work. Learning from others is encouraged, but say where code came from, and don’t copy another member’s submission or post complete solutions to someone else’s current project without being asked.
  • Never post passwords, API keys, tokens or other secrets, including inside code or uploaded files.
  • Don’t try to get into other accounts or parts of the site you aren’t allowed to use, test its security without permission, overload it, or upload anything harmful such as malware.
  • Don’t use the site for anything illegal.

Your work and posts

  • You keep ownership of the code, writing and files you submit or post.
  • You give the organiser of CodeLA a limited, non-exclusive, free permission to store your work and show it to the people you choose: to staff for review, and to other members if you share a submission or post in the community area. This permission is only for running CodeLA. You can stop sharing a submission at any time from its page. The permission ends when you delete your account, or when the organiser of CodeLA deletes a piece of work at your request (apart from copies in backups until they are replaced, and anything other members quoted from your work in their own posts).
  • You confirm you have the right to submit what you submit. Don’t submit code or text that belongs to someone else (for example an employer, another course or another member) unless its licence or the owner allows it, and credit it when you do.

Uploaded files

  • Uploads can be at most 2 MB and only these file types: .py, .zip, .txt, .md, .ipynb, .json, .csv. For bigger projects, link a GitHub repository instead.
  • CodeLA never opens, runs or executes uploaded files. They are stored privately and only offered as downloads to you, to staff and, if you shared the submission, to other members.
  • Anyone who downloads someone else’s file and chooses to run it on their own computer does so at their own risk. Read code before you run it.

Course material

Lessons, examples, practice questions and project briefs were written for CodeLA. Use them for your own learning, and keep notes and your own solutions as you wish, but please don’t republish the course material elsewhere without permission. Third-party software and design credits are listed on the credits page.

Moderation

Staff can hide questions, answers and comments that break these terms or the law, and can suspend accounts. We aim to be fair. If we hide something you posted or suspend your account, we will tell you which rule it broke whenever we have a way to contact you, and you can ask us to look at the decision again. If you see something that breaks these terms, tell a staff member or contact the organiser of CodeLA as described on the contact page. We don’t check everything before it is posted, so members are responsible for what they post.

Reviews and progress

Reviews are feedback to help you learn. Completing lessons on CodeLA is not a qualification, grade, certificate or accreditation, and we make no promise about what you will learn or about jobs or exams.

Outside resources

Lessons link to resources we don’t control, such as the Python documentation, GitHub and other tutorials. They are chosen with care, but we are not responsible for their content or availability, and their own terms apply when you use them.

Availability

We provide CodeLA free of charge and “as is”. We try to keep it running and your work safe, but we can’t promise it will always be available, error-free or kept forever. We may change features, pause the site or close it, and will try to give members notice so they can download their data first. Keep your own copy of important work, for example in a GitHub repository.

Liability

To the extent permitted by law, the organiser of CodeLA is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profit or opportunity, arising from your use of CodeLA. Because the site is free, any other liability is limited as far as the law allows. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law.

Leaving or suspension

  • You can leave at any time: delete your account from your profile. It is removed straight away, together with your work. Download your data first if you want to keep it.
  • We may suspend or remove an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or when the study group ends. Where it is reasonable, we will tell you first and give you a chance to download your data.

Fees

CodeLA is free. We take no payments; see the refund policy. If that ever changes, new terms will explain the price before you are asked to pay anything.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when features change. We will update the date at the top of this page and, for important changes, tell members on the dashboard before they take effect. If you don’t agree with a change, you can delete your account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the country where the organiser of CodeLA is based. If you live in another country, you keep any protection that its law gives you and that cannot be excluded. If something goes wrong, please contact us first so we can try to put it right.

Contact

For questions about these terms, contact the organiser of CodeLA as described on the contact page.
